About the Marathon

It goes undisputed that Africans have dominated the sport of modern day the marathon, and no continent has ever produced as many professional world-class runners as Africa. The African Marathon now presents the arena for athletes all over the world to rise to greatness. We proudly say, “To beat the Africans, you have to beat them in their own backyard.” What a great challenge it brings to the sport. The African Marathon features runners from over 150 countries, elite African runners, and is supported by Africans and a large contingent of volunteers from around the world. The African Marathon exits for the promotion of peace, the sports of long distance-running, and the health and fitness of Africans and the world at large. Whether you are a professional runner, a weekend warrior, or just participating in your first marathon, the African Marathon will test the limit of your endurance. The Marathon has become the main event of cities around the world. With the New York Marathon attracting over 100,000 applicants each year and over 365 million television viewers, the sport of the marathon has proven to be a world main event. The African Marathon inaugural race will be held in Abuja, the new idyllic and opulent capital city of Nigeria. The hub of Africa, with its rolling hills and greenery, Abuja is known for being the best purpose-built city in Africa as well as being one of the wealthiest and secure. Abuja's geography is defined by Aso Rock, a 400-metre monolith left by water erosion, wide boulevards, the Presidential Complex, the National Assembly, the Supreme Court, and the Halls of African States. Much of the town extends to the south of the rock.
